SECOND WORD WAR was fought between the AIXS Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan) and the Allied Powers (Great Britain, United States, Soviet Union, France). World War II begins in 1939 when Germany invades Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany. World War II started in Europe but spread all over the world. Much of the fighting occurred in Europe and Southeast Asia (Pacific). The war in Europe ends with the surrender of Germany on May 7, 1045. On August 6, 1945, America drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan. The bomb destroyed the city and killed thousands of people. While Japan still refused to surrender, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later. The War in the Pacific ends when Japan surrenders on September 2th, 1945.

At the end of the Second World War, Britain, albeit victorious, is a country on its knees from an economic point of view with a semi-destroyed capital (the town of Coventry had been completely razed to the ground, hence the verb to coventrize).

Great Britain needs manpower, especially foreign ones, so much so that it can offer a million jobs: thus, between the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s, around 345,000 people arrived from the old continent, most of them males, looking for work (including 350 Italians for employment in agriculture, industry, mining, construction). The stay of immigrants in the UK, except in rare cases, is temporary.

1948 is, therefore, the year that sees the birth of multi-ethnicity in Great Britain.

Immigration becomes a mass phenomenon in the 1950s, when 250,000 people including Indians, Pakistanis, Africans, other Caribbeans, Hong Kong residents, arrive in London.
